Help for Actioneer AM for BlackBerry

Using Actioneer

Actioneer lets you get things done quicker, safer and easier. It dispatches agents that execute Actions for you, employing Action Messaging, a method unique to Actioneer.

Click open Actioneer either by selecting the Actioneer icon from the array of app icons on your BlackBerry, or, if you have set it up to do so (recommended), by pressing a convenience key on the side of your BlackBerry.

Enter a keyword into the message area of the app, and send the resultant Action Message off for execution by pressing the center Trackpad key on the BlackBerry. Or click an icon button in the Actioneer AM screen to select and execute an Action .

The Action Message can begin with data you enter immediately so you don't forget it, like a telephone number someone has just given you. The user data, if any, can then be followed by a keyword, or command. The keyword can be entered at the beginning or anywhere within the message. Some messages do not need any user date entered at all; just type the keyword needed to invoke an Action, or select and click an icon. Keywords are often just two or three characters long so they can specify the desired Action with minimum keystrokes.

A keyword serves as a command that selects the Action to be executed. Alternatively, Actions can be selected by hovering over an icon. The prompt area displays information about the selected Action. Clicking an icon pre-empts a selection based on a keyword included in a message, and all user-entered data, including any keywords, is operated upon by by the Action. (When an Action is selected by a keyword, the selecting keyword is ignored by the Action.)

To select an Action when you are not sure of a keyword to specify it, just find the icon for it. Hovering over an icon reveals info about its Action in the prompt widow. Select one, and click on it to dispatch it. (The keyword that can be used to select the Action is included beneath each icon. Noticing it will help you remember it next time; entering a short keyword is often easier that finding an icon.)

Selection of an Action in an Action Message provides two kinds of feedback to the user:

  1. When a keyword has been entered, the BlackBerry vibrates briefly, indicating that an Action has been selected;

  2. The Prompt Window in the app displays information for the selected Action, saying what the Action will do when executed, and providing an example which shows what must be entered, if anything, to complete the data needed by the Action. This serves as a mini-tutorial for the selected Action. It appears when a keyword has been entered, or the the cursor is hovered over the icon for the Action.

To send an Action Message once it is complete, enter a keyword for it and press the BlackBerry Trackpad key in the center of the device, or select and click on its icon.

Actioneer Setup

Positioning the Actioneer Icon on the BlackBerry Home Page

Since you will want Actioneer to be instantly available, it is a good idea to place its icon in the top row of your array of BlackBerry icons on the device Home Page.. You can move it there by selecting the Actioneer icon with the Trackpad key, pressing the BlackBerry Menu key to its immediate left, then selecting "move".

Password Entry

Click theBlackBerry Menu key, then select Manage Passwords to open a list of all active Actions that do automatic login. By convention, all such Actions have PW at the end of their name, to signify they can use your stored password for auto login.

Click open any Action to open a screen to enter the User Name and Password you use for entering that site.

In future, Actioneer will include means to capture your user name and password from the site, but for now, enter them manually.

Convenience Key

It’s a good idea to assign Actioneer to one of the two Convenience keys on the BlackBerry 6 or the single one on the BlackBerry 7. This can be done from the BlackBerry Home Page by selecting the Options icon (wrench), then selecting Device/Convenience Keys. This makes Actioneer always available for immediate use. Take out your BlackBerry, press the Convenience key, and Actioneer is ready to accept your Action Message.

Entering dates and times

The "Calendar - Add Event" Action accepts many common expressions of date and time. You can specify date and time in a variety of formats as shown below. All are case insensitive and leading zeros can be omitted.

Date:

04/16/18 (MM/DD/YY) If year is omitted, assumes current year.

11/18/2017 (MM/DD/YYYY)

October 15 (month DD) Assumes current year.

Nov 12 (month abbreviation DD) 3-letter abbreviations (plus Sept) OK.

5 April (DD month) Assumes current year

16 Jun (DD month abbreviation)

Thursday or Thu or thur or thurs (day of week or abbreviation) for date in the next 7 days.

If day of week given is the same as today, assumes 7 days hence.

If no date is given, assumes today.

Time:

12:30pm (HH:MMam or pm ) No space before a or p; “m” can be omitted,

5p (HHp or a) OK without minutes

Date and time expressions, and the keyword to invoke the Action, can be anywhere in the message:

"ev auG 15 john party 3p" is OK,

so is: "ev john 15 aug 3p party" or

"12 aug 3p john party ev "

Editing Keywords

To edit the keywords that can invoke an Action, open Actioneer, then press the BlackBerry Menu key.

From the menu displayed, use the Trackpad key to select Manage Keywords, then select an Action to see and edit its list of keywords. Keywords (or phrases) in the list are separated by commas. Entering any of them in an Action Message will select that Action.

The very first keyword in the list is the one that the app will show under the icon for tha Action. You are likely to remember it after seeing it a few times. Keep that first keyword short, so it is easy to type into an Action Message.

All keywords within a given user's set must be unique. Entering a duplicate will produce an error message. If a new Action being installed includes a duplicate of a keyword you are already using, the error message will appear requiring you to edit keywords to eliminate the duplication.

Activating Actions

Actions are installed in an active state. They can be deactivated at any time, to shorten the list of active Actions. This makes selection of an active action easier. Click the the BlackBerry Menu key, then select Activate Actions. Click on the boxes to activate/deactivate any Action.

Creating a new User Created Action

A User Created Action (UCA) will let you use Actioneer to get to any Web page on the planet . While visiting that page using Actioneer, click the BlackBerry Menu button, select Create New Action. Fill in the blanks to create a new UCA that will return you to that page. Be sure to enter a very short keyword as the first one, so it will be easy to type. The description you enter will be shown in the prompt area whenever the Action you create is selected, either by entering a keyword for it or hovering over its icon.

You can actually create a new UCA at any time you are in the AM app. Click Menu and select User Created Actions, then select New. Filling in the four fields then Save will establish a new UCA. The Action Text can be any Action Message, including a keyword. Thus if you want to login and return to the same page every time at a particular destination, enter the keyword for that destination and the addtional data that will get you to that page, just as though you were entering that data into an Action Message.

You can edit the contents of any UCA by returning to Menu/User Created Actions at any time.
